Weekend

It has been lovely! Just spending it with my loves, helping Benno study and loving on the Norabear! They are currently snuggled up lounging on me while Nora studies Ben’s face with her tiny hands

Ah, so much love!

Nora is working on spatial permanence, which comes with a touch of separation anxiety. Earlier, she had a mini meltdown when Ben tried to walk into the other room! It’s amazing how tied a mother is to her child, for as her began to cry, so did I! Luckily, he picked her up and all was right in her world 😛

Parenting is a trip, but one I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Turning a Page…

Well, I start a new job on August 1, a new job in a new month. Less money, probably more difficult work, but part of the job includes watching the boss’s granddaughter… Did I mention the new boss is my daddy?? Yep, I’ll be helping him with bookkeeping, billing, admin stuff, etc!

I am so happy! Norabear will miss her wonderful caregivers, I’m sure, as I will miss this job, but the opportunity to be there for her all day, every day, and help my daddy maintain and grow his business was too much to pass up. I feel so very, very blessed.

The teachers in the infant room at the YWCA, Alex and Danielle, really have been amazing. They’ve had my sweet, tiny girl six months now and I don’t think she’s had a bad day. Likewise, the environment in this office is rare… It has a profound lack of tension. I’ll miss it, but, luckily, I’ll only be 10 floors away as daddy’s office is on the first floor of the same building!

I can’t wait to get her new home away from home set up! While this is obviously very exciting to me, it comes with a fresh set of worries… What if I’m not the mommy full time that I think I can be? What if I’m not the employee (daddy, avert your eyes!) that I think I can be while simultaneously caring for little miss? Only time will tell, I suppose…

In other news, Nora likes to stand always now! No more sitting for this girl…

(The crib is being lowered this weekend)

Silly girl only needs mommy’s knees to pull up!

Little plug for the Garfield County Democratic Women’s Club event coming up on August 30th! Frosty Troy is going to speak at Symphony Hall. There will be refreshments, silent auction, and we are asking for canned good donations for Horn of Plenty! Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door and I’ve got em!

Thursday

I’ve never cared much for Thursdays, on the whole. No good reason, just don’t love them. Thought I’d try to brighten mine up by sharing some Nora photos 😉

20110714-101229.jpg
She is the cutest thing to ever grace a car seat.

20110714-104410.jpg
Or a crib, which she has recently started sleeping in (sans toys, of course!)!

20110714-104536.jpg
I love it when she tries to eat things.

20110714-105443.jpg
She is always daddy’s helper, and sights like this make me love them both all the more.

Change is coming to our lives in various forms… Some I’ll share now, perhaps some later. Ben is taking the bar in a week and a half. No doubt that he will pass and our years of waiting will be over! He’s so much happier when he’s actually doing work than studying to try to be qualified to do the work. I couldn’t be more proud of him.

I’m excited for so many reasons… Less stress about money, not having to worry about scheduling vacations around the school calendar (well, not til kindergarten anyway!), and just a happier, more fulfilled husband.

Another man in my life I am so very proud of is my daddy. His business is thriving, he just moved into a new office, is employing 3 people, and getting the respect and recognition for his work that is well overdue, in my opinion.

Oh! Lest I forget… This weekend two people I love and respect will be pledging their lives and love to each other. Early congratulations to Chelsea and Monte! We had the pleasure of joining them in their joined, then separate, then joined again bachelor and bachelorette parties this past weekend, during which Norabear spent her second night away from home, this time with Grandpa and Cheri!

20110714-111409.jpg
Apparently I sent her in the same jammies as her first sleepover. They are darn cute. We were pretty overjoyed to have her home, but had a great time!

Hope my Thursday thoughts appear less scattered to you than they do to me 😉

A-Z Silliness

Well, I’ve obviously gotten out of the short-lived blogging habit, so I thought I’d steal this from Stela (somebody needs to show me how to do hyperlink thingies! She’s stelabird.blogspot.com) and have a little getting to know you day… If you post this, post your link in a comment so I can read your A-Z!

A. Age: 24
B. Bed size: King, technically… Area I take up?  Smaller than a twin! 😉
C. Chore that you hate: Dishes.  Not sure why, but I think they’re just awful… Not really a fan of touching food, in general.  Feeding a little BLW girl is challenging in that respect!
D. Dogs: Two muttly dogs, Joe the blond beauty and Penny the awkward pigbat.  Love them both!
E. Essential start to your day: Waking up to silly giggles and wiggles from the little miss, followed by nursing and snuggles before we do anything else!
F. Favorite color: Red
G. Gold or Silver: Silver for sure!  I’m getting more comfortable with gold…
H. Height: 5’7
I. Instruments you play: Umm…. Clarinet?  A bit?
J. Job title: Nora’s mommy and Ben’s wife first and foremost, but also legal secretary/file clerk
K. Kids: Nora Mae makes my heart smile every day!
L. Live: Dogtown, Enid, Oklahoma
M. Mother’s name: Tracy
N. Nicknames: Steph.  Not terribly creative…
O. Overnight hospital stays: Nora’s birth!
P. Pet peeve: Spelling & obvious grammatical errors, littering, not picking up after your dog, generally jerks…
Q. Quote from a movie: Hmm… “I am serious, and dono’t call me Shirley!”  I don’t know, I’m awful at answering those sort of questions…
R. Right or left handed: Right
S. Siblings: Jim, 21 and Mary, 19.  Typing that makes me feel awfully old.
T. Time you wake up: 6:15 or so, depending on the bambino!
U. Underwear: Umm… They are big?
V. Vegetable you hate: Iceberg lettuce, raw onions, raw tomatoes!
W. What makes you run late: Nora!  Okay, other things as well, but I blame her always!
X. X-Rays you’ve had:  All of me.  That’s what happens when you have Rheumatoid Arthritis!

Z. Zoo animal: Elephants!  I want to see the baby in OKC if it ever cools down again!!

Bandaid ripped, blog continued!  Stay tuned for more interesting posts!

Swim!

My little fishy baby and I have been going to parent/child swim class! She has absolutely loved it on the whole. I love seeing her have new experiences, until the experience involves seeing what face-planting into the water feels like!

20110622-120110.jpg

She loves watching the other kids and has gotten quite good with her feet! Now if only she could keep her hands out of her mouth!

20110622-120306.jpg

She finally liked the big foam float yesterday!

20110622-120628.jpg

Thanks to the husBen and my sweet sister, Mary, for coming with and snapping some pics!

20110622-125244.jpg

I love this lil lady so much, my heart and head threaten to explode on a daily basis.

Our Weekend

It was quite eventful! Friday, Ben and I went to dinner and I couldn’t figure out why I wanted a Newcastle so badly when that is generally not my beer of choice… Then I saw this

20110613-014341.jpg

Ben pointed out it might’ve had more to do with this

20110613-014503.jpg

Smart husBen!

Saturday we had an experience in Dillard’s getting a gift for Chelsea’s bridal shower… I’ll spare the poosplosion photo, though it is available upon request! Needless to say, I hope she and Monte enjoy the gift card 😉

While Nora is a people person, she did add a new person to her list of favorites

20110613-013530.jpg

Congrats, Jonathan- with great power comes great responsibility. Next time you’re holding her and she starts smelling funny… You’re up!

Jonathan was a winner twice over, as he was chosen prettiest toilet paper wedding dress model by the lovely bride!

20110613-014114.jpg

We wish the bride and groom nothing but happiness in their life together!

Saturday night was a lovely evening hosted by the duo of Baker & Ball, of which I have no photographic evidence, and Sunday morning I woke to this!

20110613-014749.jpg

Yes, Norabear spent her first night away from mommy and daddy! I slept 5 hours straight with zero fussing next to me, woke up and leisurely laid in bed for awhile, took a very long, quiet shower, and was a little weirded out by the lack of chatter from the other room… She had a great time, though!

20110613-015104.jpg

She’s got pawpaw and grandma wrapped around that dainty little finger! She was almost happy to see me! Silly girl. I love her a ridiculous amount, but being around adults in the evening was a nice change. Don’t know that I’ll make a habit of it, but it’s good to know her world doesn’t end when we’re away overnight.

Sunday, friends came to visit from Tulsa! We had so much fun!!! Lunch, then an afternoon full of Leonardo’s!!! Nora showed her inner cannibal at Adventurequest…

20110613-020041.jpg

Angie and family, please still be our friends, even though Nora Mae thinks Miss Nina is delicious! We loved our time with you.

Thanks, everyone for bearing with me through two postless weeks… Many of you know I’m working through a couple things, and appreciate all the love and support

Bar Prep :(

Ben started his bar prep class last week. He’s mostly watching the lectures, etc, in his office in the mornings and working in the afternoons. I don’t envy him this time, even a little, but this is (hopefully!) a once in a lifetime thing.

It is taking up some evenings and weekends, as well, unfortunately… His “day off” yesterday was infringed upon by analysis of one hundred questions, and who knows what else.

Luckily, he had a little assistance from a studious young lady:

She brought him coffee, a donut, lots of verbal and moral support, and maybe a little reminder that he’s loved and appreciated.

Breakfast

Conversation had in my bed this morning:

Nora, whispering, “Dadadadadada.” Nora, slightly louder and wiggling closer to sleeping Ben, “Dadadadadada!”

Ben, “Okay, Nora, come sit with me. You can watch breakfast from over here.” turns to me and says, “That’s what she calls you in the mornings, you know. She told me.”

Nora looks me in the eye, laughs her head off, looks back at Ben and yells at the top of her tiny voice, “DADADADA!!!”

Then nurses, then we’re off to start Friday! Today has been a bit hectic, but remembering the beginning of my morning makes everything seem just rosy!

Those two sure are my world!

Tiny Little Stalker

On a lighter note:

20110526-023057.jpg

One of my tiny darling’s nicknames for awhile now has been “the daddy stalker.” She is so infatuated with Ben, it’s hilarious! She has recently also become quite curious about the animals, especially as seen above, when we’re putting her in her car seat and they’re above her. She has very obviously made it her mission to put their tails in her mouth at the quickest available moment when she is in the exersaucer or bounce bounce baby.

Now, back to the daddy stalking. Ben is no longer allowed to speak within hearing distance while Nora is eating or any hope of a complete meal is lost! She watches him sleep and waits for the moment he opens his eyes and squeals!

20110526-034752.jpg
Before seeing daddy

20110526-040614.jpg
After!

20110526-040952.jpg
What happens when he walks away!

She’s getting closer to mobility every day… I’m afraid Ben may have a shadow at that point! She already knows how to wiggle out from my nursing cover to find him, and she can stretch and roll toward him on the bed!

The past few days she’s started a chorus of “dadadadadadada.” Now, everyone tells me that she doesn’t understand, that she’s still just working on simple sounds, but when she sees me the chorus continues, and when it’s her dad it turns to squeals. You be the judge!

Can’t say that I blame the tiny Norabear… I’m quite a fan of that guy myself 🙂

The Storm

First off, I’d like everyone out-of-state to know that we are alive, Enid is fine, and we only got a tiny bit of the past two days’ horrific weather. I thought I’d take this opportunity to recount my first experience with tornadoes.

As some know, my daddy is a self-employed petroleum landman. I was born in Houston, Texas, in the midst of an oil boom time. The oil business is boom or bust, usually with very little middle ground, and shortly before my eighth birthday, it took the predicted turn, and we found ourselves moving to our family farm in Lahoma, Oklahoma.

If my memory is correct, we moved the weekend of the 13&14 of August, 1994, with a U-Haul, my parents, three kids ages nearly 8, nearly 5, and 2 1/2, two dogs, and Pavarotti the parakeet. On Monday, the 15th, my brother started his first day of kindergarten and I started my first day of third grade in the tiny grade school in Lahoma, after a year of being home schooled. Everything was going as well as possible, stuff was everywhere, as we were moving in. Now, I can’t swear to the validity of the story that follows, as I was not yet at a reliable age, but this is my memory:

August 17, 1994. Jim and I rode the bus to school. At some point it started getting kind of windy and rainy and the teacher started seeming nervous… eventually we were ushered into the hallway to sit under our hooks (where our backpacks, etc were). There was another little girl who was new to the school as well, who I believe was an immigrant. She was far more panicked than the rest of us, and that was the last we saw of her. The running joke for pretty much the remainder of my academic career at Cimarron was that she brought the storm with her.

During the storm, my mom was with my sister and my Gran (dad’s mother), unpacking and the like when they saw the wall cloud. They didn’t have time to get to the storm cellar, so the three of them squeezed into a teeny tiny closet under the stairs. My understanding is that Gran’a very proper, episcopal prayers were mixed with mom’s “dear Lord, get us the heck outta here alive!” and something apparently got through!

Daddy was on his way home from somewhere, and remembered hearing that you should lie down face first in a ditch and cover yourself if it wasn’t possible to get to shelter, so he pulled out a sleeping bag and that’s precisely what he did. When he finally made it home, he says he shouted “Auntie Em! Uncle Henry! Toto!” as he made his way to the storm cellar, only to find his wife, mother, and daughter were not there. Pretty quickly he found them in their hiding spot, though!

My mom picked us up and we got home to see the damage… All the windows were gone, trees stripped, unimaginable devastation throughout the area. The old barn collapsed. The Red Cross came to Lahoma proper and gave us food, a mop, a broom, and a bucket. I’m not really sure what else.

We stayed in Enid with my other Gran’s cousin, Jerry, and his family for a few days, I think. The following day was my eighth birthday and my presents were wrapped in the comics, which I thought was awesome. I was also given a certificate for the kitten of my choice that day.

I’m so glad the whole thing ended up as it did for us… I’m sure my parents have an entirely different view of that experience. The following is a quote from examiner.com’s Today in History for August 18:

“Residents who were in the path of the 1994 Lahoma storm in Oklahoma, awoke on this morning to find a strange world. The devastating wind and hail storm on the previous day had stripped nearly every tree of leaves in the Lahoma and Drummond areas. That, along with plowed fields from harvested wheat, left the August landscape looking eerily more like mid winter. Hail was still on the ground in some protected areas around Lahoma more than 24 hours after the storm.”

If memory serves, there were 4 touch downs in our area. It was considered an inland hurricane.

My heart goes out to all the families who were less fortunate this past week. It breaks for them. Keep them in your thoughts, if you would.
