Why I oppose SB1433, the Oklahoma Personhood Bill

I usually try to keep this blog upbeat and not very controversial, but I cannot stomach this.

I strongly oppose SB1433, the Oklahoma Personhood bill. This reprehensible and unconstitutional bill puts the existence of an embryo ahead of the life of any Oklahoma woman and girl of possible childbearing age.

This bill makes illegal the morning after pill, even in cases of rape or incest as it prevents implantation of a possibly fertilized embryo. The same reasoning applies to the IUD birth control device and makes it illegal. It makes the termination of a tubal or molar pregnancy illegal, even though that embryo could never grow to be a fetus or a baby and will more than likely kill the mother to carry if there is no medical intervention. Since an embryo would be considered a person, it makes IVF illegal, as the process generally involves the fertilization of many eggs and the ones not implanted are either frozen for possible future implantation or discarded, ruining the hopes and dreams of many couples unable to get pregnant without medical intervention. Again, it puts the doctors at serious risk should anything happen to an embryo during implantation. Any fertility treatments are risky legally for both patient and physician. Anything a woman does that could have contributed to a miscarriage can be called into question, whether or not she knows she’s pregnant. It makes no difference how much the woman wanted or didn’t want that embryo to grow to a fetus, a baby, a child, an adult…

Studies reveal that anywhere from 10-25% of all clinically recognized pregnancies will end in miscarriage… The reason for miscarriage is varied, and most often the cause cannot be identified. During the first trimester, the most common cause of miscarriage is chromosomal abnormality – meaning that something is not correct with the baby’s chromosomes. Most chromosomal abnormalities are the cause of a damaged egg or sperm cell, or are due to a problem at the time that the zygote went through the division process. ~ American Pregnancy Association

I’ll provide you my personal perspective. I am a 25 year old woman, married for five and a half years, with a beautiful daughter. I’ve been sexually active with ONE person in my life, and I married him. I’m pretty sure my lifestyle in that regard is not objectionable to hardly anyone. The existence of this bill makes me scared to death to get pregnant again, on purpose or on accident. It honestly makes me want to leave the state. I’m afraid for my daughter growing up here. I somehow don’t think the intended consequence of this bill is to strike fear into the hearts of all informed women considering having a child, but that is where I stand. This bill has 27 co-authors in the Oklahoma state senate, and I am ashamed to say that my senator is one of them. I wish every one of them and each state senator who voted for this would have thought about their daughters, their wives, their granddaughters, every woman they care about, and the consequences on their lives. This bill has passed the state senate, but the house has yet to vote! Please let your Oklahoma state representative know that you oppose this bill!

Every Oklahoman should be appalled, but every WOMAN should be ready to take to the streets. Every legislator who co-sponsored this bill is putting our lives at risk. Oklahoma legislators, keep your legislation out of my uterus and away from my safety, please. I am also issuing a personal plea to our governor to stand up for the women of her state and issue a veto, should it come to that.

My Senator, Patrick Anderson, can be reached at 405.521.5630. My Representative, Mike Jackson, can be reached at 405.557.7317. I am calling both to let them know that this bill is not what the people of Oklahoma need. Please, take action with me.

The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light no longer flow into our souls ~ Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Addict

Hello, my name is Stephanie, and I am a media addict.

Check out this story from Slate. If you are male or have not had a child, read at your own risk, because it is about…. wait for it… POSTNATAL VAGINAL REHAB.

I am in love with Pinterest. Last night, I made a little voodoo doll pin cushion from this tutorial. He looks like this:

However, Nora decided that I did not actually make a pin cushion, but a baby doll.

I guess my next project should be the actual baby doll, for which I have instructions printed and at the ready!

Pinterest is also full of awesome info for your kiddos like this list of picture books to improve your toddler’s speech.  I also found a fun blog called Play at Home Mom which I’m pretty excited to check out.

We did some book reading and card coloring 🙂

Something hilarious has been happening over at the comic, Natalie Dee. Toddler Quotes Week has me rolling on the floor. I suggest you check it out.

Also, as I mentioned yesterday, it is my sister’s birthday. Happy 20, mare bear!

My sweetheart gave me a lovely gift last night- something he made for me! Also, he included the prerequisite something delicious and a very sweet card. I’m a lucky lady.

Last, and probably least (lol), here’s a less than awesome pic of the awkward sock puppy I made Nora as her gift.

I wish everyone a wonderful day full of love and togetherness!

Craftiness

Since we’ve been feeling better, I’ve been trying to do some things… Attempting to get back into the cooking/making things/being active groove. This weekend we went grocery shopping (hooray!) and I started a few little projects!

I made a little something fun for my favorite 14 month old twinners and sent that on its way and took zero pictures, haha, other than this one

20120213-164607.jpg

Note my sweet little creeper in the background! I also put together a little something for Nora that I found on Pinterest awhile ago. This is much prettier than what Nora’s using, but hopefully I’ll get around to dressing it up one day soon. For now it is an awesome distraction, as she has recently discovered that when you take everything out, you can turn around and put it back in, and then take it out again! Her excitement tickles me to no end!

Something else I’m working on is this sock puppy. I have him mostly done, but he’s a little wonky…. I didn’t really leave enough of the sock for his body! I am so glad Nora is not picky. Luckily, we have a plethera of socks without mates or socks that the husBen no longer enjoys, so if this turns out decently, I can give it another go. I’m going to attempt maybe something different tonight… We’ll see how much creative energy I can muster!

Tomorrow is the big VDAY. Let me start out by saying that this is also the TWENTIETH year it is the anniversary of the birth of my sister! Thanks, mom and dad for that lovely and loving gift. I am so glad that as we grow we’ve been able to grow together, not only as family, but as friends. Nora and Alexis are so lucky to have such a doting aunt in their lives, and I am sure they will appreciate her more and more as the years go on. I wouldn’t trade our relationship for the world. Mary has always been so awesome about sharing her birthday with a holiday – I think she still is convinced we all celebrate love on this day because of her 😉

20120213-171130.jpg

Ben and I had our date this past Saturday and it was lovely 🙂 I am lucky to be married to such a wonderful man. Since we went out this weekend, our evening tomorrow will most likely be spent with a pizza and a movie, cuddling our little loverbug. I will say that, while I hardcore dig the mushy lovey dovey stuff, I try to take the time to think about the dark side of “love” and keep the survivors of violence against women in my thoughts this time of year. If you have an opportunity to support a V-Day organization or event near you, it will be time and money well spent. If not, I ask that you maybe send a thought or prayer up on behalf of women and girls around the world, until the violence stops.

Last night we had the first real snow all winter!

I give you Nora in a snowsuit!!! Very glad she got to use it before she outgrew it, even if it’s only once.  This girl is something pretty special.

END of Illness

So, I’ve started a couple of posts but haven’t posted in a bit, because THE PLAGUE took over our house! I had an RA flare (one of my posts in the works is attempting to make sense of this phenomenon without anyone else having to experience it), then Ben got the stomach flu, during which Nora started to get the sniffles, followed by my cold that would NOT quit, which turned into bronchitis and a sinus infection. Boo all around!

However, Ben is better, Nora is better, and I am finally on the mend! Tonight, Ben and I will be waiting tables for Gaslight Theatre’s annual dinner theater, and tomorrow night we’ll be seeing the show! This year’s performance is Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily. Dinner theater is held at the Enid Symphony Center and is really a treat. Mom and I will be waiting tables next weekend as well, so I’ll get the full experience 😉

This morning, this crazy kiddo got distracted by her Pawpaw mid-pic! Silly angel.

20120210-114732.jpg

Mom and I were talking last night about how she seems to have changed recently, almost over night. She’s less and less baby and more and more toddler. The words that make sense to anyone but me are becoming more frequent and are more and more in context. Her movement is more graceful, feet are closer together when she walks… Everything about her is screaming “little girl!” She can sit through many books now, some even three times in a row. It’s crazy how a mother’s love grows and grows with the little monster…

One of my favorite things in the world continues to be watching her sleep.

Swinging in January

The weather has been a little insane lately. We’ve not had many real wintery days this year, but it’s been a bit chilly recently. Today is gorgeous, though! We took the afternoon for fun and headed to my parents’ for the swing

Nora absolutely adores the swing. She went for about an hour!

She’s so fun.

Friday Funkiness

I’m going to give you some odd tidbits, because I feel like it.

I’ve been reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it, because I am, in typical nerdy girl fashion, in love with Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, etc. I am kind of in love with this take on the classic, however. I like a world where the Sisters Bennet can defend themselves against the legions of the undead. It makes the whole culture of the time feel less sexist and oppressive and that makes me grin, as do the illustrations.

Has anyone followed the Baby Sasha story? This child was raised for five years entirely gender neutral, only allowed gender neutral toys, dressed in both what would be considered boys clothes and girls clothes, never allowed to watch television, and referred to as “the infant” by the parents. Only a few close family members knew the gender of the child. I won’t spoil it for you… The gender was revealed today and I linked the article above. Starting school seemed to be the thing the parents couldn’t get around. It’s an interesting idea, but I really don’t think I’m scarring Nora by putting her in pretty dresses.

All dressed up for a wedding

She thinks they’re fun. She also likes the pockets on her cargo pants and sometimes picks her plain gray shirt over one with sparkly things. As she grows and exhibits more and more personality, she can make her own choices and Ben and I will respect them, because we love and respect her.

Something I’ve been obsessed with lately is Tophatter. It’s live auctions of handmade and vintage items. I get a little competitive, but I have only bought a few things and have yet to go over the limit I set for myself, so I’m pretty happy.

So cool

The coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time is this little terrarium. I have no way to justify spending the money on one, but seriously… How cool is this?? They are on a sale site I check regularly called Fab. I’ve found some truly weird and awesome things there.

Well, the sweetest bear in the world is awake and growling for lunch!

Bluumper

Ben encouraged me to also share my first attempt at opening the Bluum box, haha!

We tried the Camilia teething stuff earlier and it really seemed to make a difference.

20120125-183546.jpg

She liked the taste of it and she settled much more easily for her afternoon nap than she had this morning, and had her hands in her mouth less.

Little Miss Norabear has been a bit of a challenge lately. She is so happy and wonderful, but she just goes and goes and goes!

20120125-183920.jpg

It makes the moments she stops and cuddles so dear to my heart. Lately several times as a last ditch effort to stay awake, she’s given me a sleepy-eyed chatter and kiss fest. It’s pretty much the most amazing thing in the world.

Bluum!

I got a subscription to Bluum. It’s deluxe samples for mom & baby. I got my first box yesterday and made a little video of Nora and I unboxing it 🙂

I hope you enjoy it!

Life for Now

It’s so incredible to me how fast she changes. She’s gone from a rolling lump in my belly to a tiny helpless thing to an independent little girl in what feels like the blink of an eye.

My girl is obsessed with books. This reinforces the husBen’s and my belief that she is a mini amalgamation of us.

Here she is reading a story 🙂

She still has zero fear. She seems to always have little bumps and bruise, and just trusts that whenever she falls (or jumps!) someone will magically appear to catch her. I haven’t encountered this in a small person before. My niece and all the others I’ve been around have been much more cautious. I love her enthusiasm for life.

20120120-181943.jpg

On another note, it is 2012. My “resolution” was to try to love my husband and daughter better, take better care of me, and bring more positivity to our lives. I summed it up as “more Suzy Homemaker, less fat.”

I got a sewing machine from my madre for Christmas. So far it baffles, intimidates, and delights me.

20120120-182728.jpg
I made a heart garland 🙂

Sunday is my love‘s birthday. He’s started blogging and I think it’s quite wonderful. He has the most amazing way with words. It’s one of the things I first loved about him. When we were young, he used to rub my head and tell me stories of what our life might be like together someday… So far, even as wonderful a storyteller as he is, the truth is better than fiction.
